Series Alert: Yankees set to battle Mets (2024)

When & Where To Watch

Tonight: Coverage on YES and the YES App begins at 6:00 with Yankees Batting Practice Today

Tomorrow: YES and the YES App will have the Postgame Show following action on Prime, where coverage is going to start at 6:30 p.m.

Probable Starters

After striking out five and throwing 62 pitches in his season debut last Wednesday, Gerrit Cole will make his second start this evening and his third career start in Subway Series action. The ace took no-decisions against the Mets in 2021 and 2023. He’ll work opposite David Peterson, who has also pitched in two previous Subway Series games, a start in 2020 and a relief appearance in 2022. Luis Gil will receive his first taste of Yankees-Mets action when he faces the Amazins for the first time tomorrow night. The Mets are going to counter with offseason signing Sean Manaea, who is 4-3 with a 4.16 ERA in 14 starts.

Pinstriped Pulse

At 52-28, the Yankees have the second-best record in the American League behind 50-26 Cleveland, and they are two games ahead of Baltimore for first place in the AL East. Anthony Volpe is riding a seven-game hitting streak during which he is batting .321 with four doubles. Trent Grisham is batting .286 with a pair of homers over his last eight starts. Ben Rice is 5-for-17 with three walks in 21 plate appearances since being called up to the Majors. Phil Bickford has made two scoreless appearances out of the bullpen since his own promotion. Giancarlo Stanton was placed on the injured list Sunday with a left hamstring strain that he suffered the night before. The Yanks made a trade prior to their last game, acquiring infielder J.D. Davis from Oakland. A former Met who also previously played for Houston and the Giants, Davis was slashing .236/.304/.366 in 135 plate appearances with the A’s, who started him 17 times at first base, 11 times at third base and five times at designated hitter.

How ‘Bout That

As the Yankees reach the official halfway point of their season, Aaron Judge continues to put up prolific numbers. Even though he was held quiet during Sunday’s series finale against the Braves, Judge went into that game with 51 extra-base hits, making him just the fourth Yankees player in history to have reached that number within the team’s first 79 games of a season. The others: Lou Gehrig three times, Babe Ruth twice and Joe DiMaggio once. Pretty good company as usual for number 99, right?

Know The Foe

The 37-39 Mets are part of a crowded National League Wild Card picture, and are one of seven teams within three games of a playoff spot. The Wild Card is likely their only avenue to the postseason, as they trail the NL East-leading Phillies by 14 games. The Mets have gone 13-4 since June 3, giving them the best record in the Majors during that span. After being ejected from Sunday’s game against the Cubs, closer Edwin Diaz has received a 10-game suspension plus an undisclosed fine for violating MLB’s prohibition on foreign substances, and he has decided not to appeal. Among hitters with at least 40 at-bats, late-March signing J.D. Martinez has the highest batting average on the team at .290. Pete Alonso leads the Mets with 16 home runs, and his 42 RBI are second on the club, one behind Brandon Nimmo. Since April 5, the Mets are 16-3 in games when their starting catcher is Francisco Alvarez, who has guided Mets pitchers to a 2.58 ERA. The team’s ERA is 4.72 when other catchers are behind the plate. Francisco Lindor has 13 homers and 13 stolen bases – the injured Starling Marte (12) and ex-Yankee Harrison Bader (10) also have double-digit steals.
