10 Best Final Fantasy XIV: Dawntrail Characters, Ranked (2024)

After a long two-and-a-half-year wait, the latest Final Fantasy XIV expansion has finally been released! Final Fantasy XIV: Dawntrail ushers in a new era for Final Fantasy XIV as it kicks off a brand new story arc. Dawntrail takes the Warrior of Light and their close companions to "the New World" of Tural, a continent far to the west whose existence has mostly been lost in Eorzean lore.

In Tural, the Warrior of Light aids Wuk Lamat in her journey to succeed her adoptive father, Gulool Ja Ja, as the Dawnservant of Tuliyollal through the Rite of Succession competition. Wuk Lamat and Gulool Ja Ja are among the many great characters, new and returning, throughout Dawntrail's memorable cast. Which Dawntrail character has earned the claim of being the best of the entire expansion?

This list will contain major spoilers for Dawntrail. It's advisable not to continue until finishing the main story quest of Dawntrail.

Bakool Ja Ja is one of the four claimants to the seat of Dawnservant. A two-headed Mamool Ja, just like the reigning Dawnservant Gulool Ja Ja, Bakool Ja Ja's birth was a miracle. The result of a union between the Hoobigo and Boonewa tribes, two-headed Mamool Jas are much stronger than single-headed ones and are worshiped in the process. Two-headed Mamool Jas are roughly one in a hundred births.

However, the desire to spawn two-headed Mamool Jas has created a dark secret buried deep in Yak T'el, which has weighed heavy on Bakool Ja Ja. However, since Yak T'el has struggled to farm meaningful resources, the people of Mamook looked toward their blessed Bakool Ja Ja to deliver them from their current misery. Bakool Ja Ja felt no choice but to cheat and obstruct during the Rite of Succession, becoming a thorn in the side of the other competitors. By the end of Dawntrail, Bakool Ja Ja becomes a sympathetic figure who begins to embrace doing the right thing.

Everything You Need To Know About Final Fantasy XIV: Dawntrail

The long wait is over! Final Fantasy XIV: Dawntrail is here! What is there to know about the latest Final Fantasy XIV expansion?

Throughout the Rite of Succession, each of the claimants learns about the different cultures throughout Tural. In turn, this shifts the worldview of each competitor as they learn that their ruling philosophy is nowhere near as viable in practice. They need to approach issues from multiple angles to find the correct path forward.

This was a difficult thing for Koana as the student from Sharlayan has only ever desired to advance Tural technologically. Koana needed to learn that not everything could be solved through pure logic. Communication and sympathy were also required. His intelligence and growing interpersonal skills made him an easy choice for Wuk Lamat to stand beside her as the Vow of Reason to her Vow of Resolve, collectively becoming the Dawnservant and filling the role of each of Gulool Ja Ja's heads.

At first, Queen Sphene appears to be an extremely kind and loving character. Someone who cares deeply about protecting her people of Alexandria, even in the face of Zoraal Ja's newfound rule after crossing through the door to the "city of gold" into Queen Sphene's reflection world.

Underneath her benevolent surface is a tragic past — a ruler who was previously struck down in a calamity. Queen Sphene lives on as an "Endless" or someone whose soul and memories are recycled as an effective form of immortality. The same for many of the people she seeks to protect in Living Memory – a heaven-like location. Due to her resurrection, she is programmed to have an unyielding will to protect her people. This leads to her seeking to merge her world with others to bring about death as a means of collecting souls to maintain the survival of her people, becoming the true villain of Dawntrail in the process.

Krile Baldesion has had a long tenure in Final Fantays XIV first debuting in the 3.1 patch in 2015 during the Heavensward era. However, Krile was mentioned a few times throughout A Realm Reborn as a friend of Minfilia. Like the Warrior of Light, Krile has access to the Echo, the ability to tap into the souls of others to see things such as fragments of their past. After Heavensward's content ended, Krile was sadly pushed to the sidelines for the most part. Her wisdom is invaluable, but her role rarely exceeded expert opinion.

That changed with Dawntrail. At the end of Endwalker, Krile picked up Pictomancy to be more of an asset in the field, so it was great to see her get in on the action in Dawntrail. On top of that, the mystery of why her grandfather, Galuf, went to Tural serves as one of the underlying mysteries of Dawntrail that not only becomes key to ultimate victory but also brings to light Krile's origins. Krile's moment to shine and its emotional payoff was a long time coming, and worth the wait.

10 Times Final Fantasy Brought Fans to Tears

The Final Fantasy franchise is known for its action-packed boss fights, but their emotional moments are just as impactful.

Ser Otis Velona is the valiant knight of Alexandria but laments the fact he couldn't save Queen Sphene during the calamity that originally befell her nation. Ser Otis was one of the first subjects in the research of soul transference later used to resurrect Queen Sphene. However, Otis' physical form is that of a machine, in which he's survived for hundreds of years. Likely a nod to the "rusty" nickname given to Steiner in Final Fantasy IX.

By the time the Warrior of Light meets Otis, he's caring for Gulool Ja, the surprise and disowned son of Zoraal Ja. Otis is a kind and personable knight who valiantly sacrifices himself to protect Queen Sphene in one of the saddest moments of Dawntrail. Overall, Otis offers some of the most hilarious moments in Dawntrail whether it's in his machine form or in his original physical form in Living Memory, where he sets up a play for the local children.

After spending the better part of two expansions with Erenville, it would be easy to assume his parents are just as reserved as he is. Especially since his mother is also his mentor. That couldn't be further from the truth. His mother, Cahciua, is very extroverted with a fun personality.

When Queen Sphene and Zoraal Ja merged part of their world with Tural, Erenville's hometown was stuck underneath the newly formed dome. Inside the dome, time moves much faster with 30 years now past. When Erenville reunites with his mother, she takes the form of an expressive machine that she controls remotely and leads the resistance against Zoraal Ja. Turns out, Cahciua has been in Living Memory as an Endless, already dead. Her intelligence and determination led to ensuring the Endless could rest in peace provided the means to end Queen Sphene's world-devouring schemes.

Prior to the Queen Sphene villain twist, Zoraal Ja was built up as the primary villain of Dawntrail. The lone true-born child of Gulool Ja Ja, his birth was never meant to happen. It was always believed that two-headed Mamool Ja couldn't breed. With his father looking to pass on the mantle of Dawnservant, the "Resilient One" believes he's the true heir.

Zoraal Ja seeks the power to expand Tural into a large-scale empire. After being disqualified from the Rite of Succession, he took matters into his own hands. He gained access to the city of gold and entered Living Memory. There he formed an alliance with Queen Sphene thanks to their overlapping goals, becoming king of Alexandria in the process. Thanks in part to his calm, soft-spoken personality, and his immense strength, Zoraal Ja became an intimidating villain as Dawntrail progressed. His desire to establish a legacy meant he would stop at nothing to surpass his father in strength and reverence.

Tural would be a far different place without Gulool Ja Ja. Tural was in a constant state of conflict and it needed a unifier. So Gulool Ja Ja set off on a pilgrimage with his close allies, including Krile's grandfather Galuf and Cahciua, to help the many different communities throughout Tural. This pilgrimage would serve as the basis for the Rite of Succession so that the next Dawnservant would follow his same path.

Gulool Ja Ja is a strong warrior who loves a challenge, as seen by his sparring matches with Estinien and the Warrior of Light utilizing his Viper Job abilities. Beyond all else, Gulool Ja Ja is a beloved ruler who has maintained peace and prosperity for decades. It's always refreshing to see someone rule and lead the right way, especially in Final Fantasy XIV's world, and to see them committed to ensuring their successor lives up to the same standard.

10 Best Final Fantasy VII Characters, Ranked

Final Fantasy VII is known for its incredible cast of characters, but some stand out as better than the rest.

Erenville was already one of the best characters in Endwalker and he carries that over into Dawntrail. Erenville is aloof and reserved. He's a true introvert who makes the most of every line, always coming across as exhausted by the energy that surrounds him. Erenville isn't afraid to be direct and honest with his views, but he's far from a jerk.

Returning to his home, Erenville proves to be a great guide for the Warriors of Light and their companions as they explore Tural. His desire to reunite with his mother/mentor to tell her all about his recent adventures and the discovery of the city of gold. His reunion with his mother and his acceptance of letting her go was emotional. His journey to reach that point saw no shortage of personal growth as he began to open up more and embrace the friendships he's made. It's clear Cahciua is proud of her "fussy little bunbun" after seeing him surrounded by friends and exploring the world in ways she only dreamed of.

At the center of Dawntrail is Wuk Lamat. The main character of Dawntrail, so to speak. Wuk Lamat is the adoptive daughter of Gulool Ja Ja and one of the claimants to the seat of Dawnservant. Unlike her siblings and Bakool Ja Ja, Wuk Lamat's body of work is underwhelming in comparison. She's not as strong, as intelligent, and has nowhere near as many accomplishments as her fellow competitors. What she does have is heart and the desire to maintain peace.

In many ways, Wuk Lamat is similar to Dragon Ball's Goku. Someone who brings innocence, bravado, the will to do right to the people who need it, and who would prefer not to kill anyone unless they felt they had no other recourse. Wuk Lamat is full of fears and insecurities but is determined to confront those because she knows the path she's on is the correct one. It's easy to get attached to Wuk Lamat and it was wonderful to see her grow over the course of Dawntrail as she navigates who she is and how to become the leader the people deserve. Wuk Lamat is also notable for being the first female Hrothgar seen in Final Fantasy XIV, which is now a playable race.
